Story notes: Did you ever try to use the 'automatic summary' button in word? Well I did. You'll first read the summary that's supposed to be 10% of the text. Then 25%. Then 50%. And then finally the whole story. It's confusing but funny!
Oh yes, and I know it's still confusing after you read the whole story, but that's because it is only a scene from a larger story I have in my head. I still hope you like it! Haldir's POV.
'You saved my life.' 'You saved my life. 'You saved my life. 'Sometimes dreams are important. 'You said you loved me. I do love you.'

'You said you would fade if I died. A silence fell.

'Don't cry, melamin. I shook my head. I had to swallow before I could answer. If you... If you think your love will last, you could... wait for me?'

I felt tears burn in my eyes, afraid of his answer.

He turned back and looked at me. 'Will your love last?'

A brushed away a strand of hair that had fallen over his face. 'Turn around, melamin, and I will warm you.'

'You saved my life.' 'You saved my life. 'You saved my life. 'Sometimes dreams are important. 'You said you loved me. You begged the Valar to let me live. ''T was not a dream, melamin. I do love you.'

'You said you would fade if I died. A silence fell.

I saw a tear form a path from his eye over his dirty cheek, and I carefully brushed it away. 'Don't cry, melamin. I felt very guilty when I stopped him leaning in to place a kiss on my lips, as if to seal his words.

'Because I could not carry out my mission if my spirit would have followed yours.'

I shook my head. I had to swallow before I could answer. 'I don't understand.'

'Please trust me.' If you... If you think your love will last, you could... wait for me?'

I felt tears burn in my eyes, afraid of his answer. He turned back and looked at me. 'Will your love last?'

A brushed away a strand of hair that had fallen over his face. His face felt warm under my hand. 'Forever,' I whispered.

A disbelieving look crossed his face, and then he frowned. You toss my hart around, like the wind would play with a leaf fallen from a tree.'

His words combined with the pained look on his face made my hart ache fiercely, maybe even more than the day I had to turn him away the first time, so many years ago.

'I am sorry.'

'Turn around, melamin, and I will warm you.' As he turned around I lifted the blanket and laid down beside him, wrapping my arms carefully around him.

'Haldir.' It was a faint whisper coming from the corner of the cave, where I had put the wounded Elf in order to protect him from the storm outside.

'You saved my life.' His voice was barely audible, and I had to lean forward to hear him. His face was pale, but his eyes looked clear and as bright blue as ever.

I ignored his statement just like he ignored my question and offered him some miruvor. 'You saved my life. 'You saved my life. It was quiet for a while, and he stared into the blackness of the ceiling of the cave.

'Sometimes dreams are important. 'You said you loved me. You begged the Valar to let me live. No more lies.

''T was not a dream, melamin. I do love you.'

He opened his eyes and he looked as if he was almost not daring to hope that what he had just heard was true. 'You said you would fade if I died. A silence fell.

'My love for you is a fact, they could not have stopped me loving you if they wanted to.'

I saw a tear form a path from his eye over his dirty cheek, and I carefully brushed it away. 'Don't cry, melamin. I felt very guilty when I stopped him leaning in to place a kiss on my lips, as if to seal his words.

'I am on a mission for the Valar, yes, and they forbade me to start a relationship with anyone, because they wanted to make sure my first loyalty laid with them. By saving your life and risking mine a showed that that was not were my loyalties lay.'

'Because I could not carry out my mission if my spirit would have followed yours.'

I shook my head. I had to swallow before I could answer. 'I don't understand.'

'Please trust me.' It was a desperate plea.

He didn't answer. If you...

'I don't understand you. You toss my hart around, like the wind would play with a leaf fallen from a tree.'

His words combined with the pained look on his face made my hart ache fiercely, maybe even more than the day I had to turn him away the first time, so many years ago.

'I am not the wind, Legolas. Do you not see that now I have to turn you away again I am plunging the knife in my hart even deeper? That can only hope that one day you will heal the wounds in my soul just like I would like to heal yours when the time comes?' 'I am sorry.'

'At least we share the same pain.'

I smiled at him. 'That's the spirit. 'Turn around, melamin, and I will warm you.' As he turned around I lifted the blanket and laid down beside him, wrapping my arms carefully around him. 'Go to sleep, we're safe here.' He clasped my arms and pulled his back firmly against my chest as he went back to sleep.

'Haldir.' It was a faint whisper coming from the corner of the cave, where I had put the wounded Elf in order to protect him from the storm outside.

'I am here.' I walked over to him from where I was standing at the entrance of the cave. 'How are you feeling?'

'You saved my life.' His voice was barely audible, and I had to lean forward to hear him. His face was pale, but his eyes looked clear and as bright blue as ever.

I ignored his statement just like he ignored my question and offered him some miruvor. 'Here, drink some of this.' He swallowed grateful as I put the flask to his lips and carefully let the fluid enter his mouth.

'You saved my life. You shouldn't have put yourself in danger like that. We could have both died.'

'As I remember I was the one using that argument first.'

'You saved my life. I could hardly leave you behind.'

'Just like I couldn't leave you. We shouldn't argue about this, it happened and I don't regret what I did.'

'Neither do I.'

'Well then I don't see the problem.'

He just sighed and shook his head. It was quiet for a while, and he stared into the blackness of the ceiling of the cave.

'What are you thinking about?'

He turned on his side.

'It's nothing. I just had a strange dream while I was out.'

I laid down beside him on the straw, so I could look him in the eye again.

'Would you tell me about it?'

He averted his eyes. 'It is not important, it was just a dream.'

'Look at me, Legolas.' He obeyed. 'Sometimes dreams are important. Please tell me.'

He let his eyes wander over my face, and then closed them.

'You said you loved me. Over and over again. You begged the Valar to let me live. And something I didn't understand, about a task or something.'

So he knew! He knew I loved him, he knew about my mission! Well that was the way it had to be then. No more lies.

''T was not a dream, melamin. I do love you.'

He opened his eyes and he looked as if he was almost not daring to hope that what he had just heard was true. 'You said you would fade if I died. That you would follow my spirit wherever it went.'

'It is the truth.'

A silence fell.

'So now they will let you love me?'

'My love for you is a fact, they could not have stopped me loving you if they wanted to.'

I saw a tear form a path from his eye over his dirty cheek, and I carefully brushed it away. 'Don't cry, melamin. Everything will be fine.'

'Yes. Now we can finally be together.'

I felt very guilty when I stopped him leaning in to place a kiss on my lips, as if to seal his words.

'I am afraid it is not that simple.'

He looked at me, and I could read the bitter pain and fear of rejection in his eyes.

My own heart fiercely ached as I saw this, and tried to explain. 'I am on a mission for the Valar, yes, and they forbade me to start a relationship with anyone, because they wanted to make sure my first loyalty laid with them. By saving your life and risking mine a showed that that was not were my loyalties lay.'

'Then why did they save me the second time?'

'Because I could not carry out my mission if my spirit would have followed yours.'

'But now they still forbid you to have a relationship with me?'

I shook my head. 'No. They know now that they would loose my loyalty completely if they did that. You see, they can't threaten me that they will take you away from me, because I wouldn't live. And they need me.'

He looked at me desperately. 'Then why?'

I had to swallow before I could answer. 'Because it would not be fair.'

'I don't understand.'

'I know you don't, and I am sorry but I can't give you an explanation right now. You'll have to take my word for it that it is reason enough not to start a relationship with you.'

He turned on his back with a bitter look on his face.

'Please trust me.' It was a desperate plea.

He didn't answer. 'When my mission is over I will be able to explain everything, I promise. If you...

'I don't understand you. Every time I think I do, and then you confuse me again. You toss my hart around, like the wind would play with a leaf fallen from a tree.'

His words combined with the pained look on his face made my hart ache even more fiercely, maybe even more than the day I had to turn him away the first time, so many years ago.

'I am not the wind, Legolas. I am merely another leaf that is being blown around. Do you not see that now I have to turn you away again I am plunging the knife in my hart even deeper? That can only hope that one day you will heal the wounds in my soul just like I would like to heal yours when the time comes?' I was really at the brink of tears now. He turned back to me. 'I am sorry.'

'As am I, melamin. But being sorry won't get us anywhere, we'll just have to make the best of it. It's the most we can do right now.'

He nodded. 'At least we share the same pain.'

I smiled at him. 'That's the spirit. We're in this together, and nothing can take us away from each other.' He smiled back, and then I saw him shiver under his blanket.

'Turn around, melamin, and I will warm you.' As he turned around I lifted the blanket and laid down beside him, wrapping my arms carefully around him. 'Go to sleep, we're safe here.' He clasped my arms and pulled his back firmly against my chest as he went back to sleep.
